A 26-year-old woman was arrested Saturday morning after Sault police say they found her asleep behind the wheel of a running vehicle — with drug paraphernalia in her hand.

The car was parked on Henrietta Avenue “half on the curb,” police say.

“Officers woke the driver,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “After speaking with the accused, officers developed grounds to believe their ability to operate a motor vehicle was impaired by drugs. They were arrested.”

A subsequent search of the vehicle uncovered approximately seven grams of suspected cocaine, approximately two grams of suspected fentanyl, approximately seven grams of suspected methamphetamine and other drug paraphernalia.

Patricia Viermaa, 26, charged with:

  • Operation While Impaired (Drug and/or Alcohol)
  • Possession of Schedule I Substance for Purpose of Trafficking x2
  • Possession of Schedule II Substance for Purpose of Trafficking

Viermaa was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on Nov. 20, 2023.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Viermaa is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
