A 30-year-old woman was arrested yesterday for allegedly throwing food in a police officer’s face, then punching and scratching officers as they tried to restrain her.

The incident occurred on Tuesday around 2 p.m., when Sault police responded to a report of a theft in the 300 block of Northern Avenue East.

“Upon arrival, officers attempted to speak with the accused, and they walked away,” says a news release issued today by the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. “When officers followed the accused and told them to stop walking, they threw food at an officer’s face.”

When the officers tried to arrest the woman, she allegedly punched and kicked them and “disobeyed commands to stop.”

After the woman was handcuffed, police say they found items in her possession that were reported stolen.

Keri Sayers is charged with:

  • Assault of a Peace Officer
  • Resisting a Peace Officer
  • Theft – Under $5,000
  • Possession of Property Obtained by Crime – Under $5,000
  • Failure to Comply with Probation Order x2

She was released on an undertaking and is scheduled back in court on August 21, 2023.

None of the allegations against Sayers have been tested in court and she is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
