The ongoing COVID-19 pandeming has forced Batchewana First Nation to postpone its general election.

Originally scheduled for Feb. 5, 2021, the election has been pushed back 90 days to May 5, 2021.

The decision was made at a council meeting on Oct. 28 and current councilors as well as Chief Dean Sayers will remain in their current positions until the new election date.

A resolution brought to council at its Oct. 28 meeting, cited the recent spike in COVID-19 cases in Algoma and a reccomendation by Indigenous Services Canada to postpone any upcoming elections due to the pandemic as the reason for the decision to delay the election.

As part of the decision, a nomination meeting will be rescheduled ahead of the new election date.
