COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

The federal goverment announced Monday that it's ready to mobilize 24,000 Canadian troops for COVID-19

In local news, Sault Area Hospital has set up tents near its emergency department entrance in anticipation of potential surge of COVID-19 cases. 

Algoma Public Health announced Tuesday that a fifth resident of the Algoma District has tested positive for COVID-19. 

Sault Ste. Marie Police Service Chief Hugh Stevenson says city police are prepared to enforce the province's five-person gathering limit, promising significant fines for people disobeying the order. 

The City of Sault Ste. Marie announced Tuesday that it's closing all city playgrounds and outdoor recreation spaces.

Green spaces in parks, trails, ravines and conservation areas that are not otherwise closed will remain open for walkthrough access, but individuals must maintain the safe physical distance of at least two metres apart from others.

In provincial news, the Ontario government announced Wednesday evening that it's extending the emergency declaration to stop the spread of COVID-19 throughout the province. 

On Tuesday afternoon, the province announced additional supports for post-secondary students and institutions, including online learning for students, $25 million for colleges and universities and an interest-free deferral of provincial student loan repayments until Sept. 30. 

The province also announced Tuesday that schools in Ontario will remain closed until at least May 4. 

Ontario confirmed another 260 positive cases of COVID-19 Tuesday morning, bumping up the total number of positive cases in the province to 1,966.
