COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

Sault students to remain at home, study online until at least May 31

Sault and area students at publicly funded elementary and secondary schools will be staying at home and studying online for a while longer.

Ontario Education Minister Stephen Lecce has announced schools across the province will stay closed due to fears of COVID-19 transmission, the decision based on medical advice.

It is not yet known if the closures will be extended even further. 

First Nations schools, private schools and licensed child care centres will be closed until at least May 6.

Ontario Public Health is reporting more recoveries than new cases of COVID-19 today.

There were another 437 cases included in this morning’s report and 491 new recoveries.

The province reports another 24 deaths today, with five more outbreaks at long-term care homes.

There have been 14,432 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, confirmed by labs, and of those cases 8,000 have now recovered, 835 have died.

The Ministry of Long-Term Care states there have been 147 outbreaks at long-term care facilities, 31 outbreaks now declared resolved. Since mid-January, there have been 2,520 confirmed cases in residents, 1,161 cases in staff, and 654 deaths of residents.

Here are the latest COVID-19 numbers for the Algoma District from Algoma Public Health (updated by APH at 9:30 a.m. April 26):

  • 1,819 tested
  • 13 positive
  • 1,335 negative
  • 471 pending 
  • 0 deceased
  • Nine recovered

There have been nine cases in the Sault, less than five in central and east Algoma, three in Elliot Lake and area.
