COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

Police trying to curb break-ins to businesses shuttered by pandemic; 434 new COVID-19 cases reported in Ontario Sunday

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced $240 million in funding Sunday to bring mental health services and virtual primary care online for Canadians.

Trudeau also announced more than $175 million to fund Canadian company AbCellera for COVID-19 research. 

Details surrounding the launch of a national council for COVID-19 medical supplies are expected to be announced Sunday. 

In provincial news, Ontario reported 434 new cases of COVID-19 Sunday, bringing the total number of cases in the province to 17,553.  

Ontario Premier Doug Ford told a news conference in Toronto Saturday that much higher gas prices in northern Ontario are 'totally unfair' and that Minister of Energy Greg Rickford is "all over this."

A critical care chief in northern Ontario says Canada has seemingly escaped the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic, but warns the country isn't quite out of the woods yet. 

In local news, Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has established a break-and-enter task force in repsonse to a rash of break-ins to businesses shuttered by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Total confirmed cases by area of residence:

  • 9 in Sault Ste. Marie and area, with evidence of community spread
  • 1 in central and east Algoma
  • 3 in Elliot Lake and area ***
  • 0 in north Algoma 

*** Three positive cases in Elliot Lake and area have been confirmed by Elliot Lake Family Health Team
