COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

On Thursday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced that an agreement has been reached to top up wages for essential workers in Canada, but it will be up to the provinces and territories to determine which essential workers are eligible for the wage top-up. 

Trudeau says details of that agreement are currently being finalized. 

In provinicial news, Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced Thursday that a framework to resume scheduled surgeries and procedures has been developed by the province. 

Ontario reported 399 new cases of COVID-19 Thursday. 347 recoveries and 48 deaths were also reported as part of the province's daily update. 

The premier says cottage country mayors are asking people to hold off travelling to their regions. 

In local news, a COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Extendicare Maple View after three residents there tested positve for the virus. 

Agawa Canyon Tour Train has pulled the plug on its trains until Sept 1, while Rainbow Camp has scrapped its plans for the summer. 

SooToday's Darren Taylor took part in a virtual town hall with northern Ontario ministers to discuss the re-opening of Ontario's economy, among other things.

Total confirmed cases by area of residence:

  • 12 in Sault Ste. Marie and area, with evidence of community spread
  • 1 in central and east Algoma
  • 3 in Elliot Lake and area ***
  • 0 in north Algoma
