Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says the federal government will be working closely with airlines in order to discuss options for workers after Air Canada announced that it's laying off more than half of its 38,000 employees next month.

“We will continue to work with the sectors and industries that have been very hard hit by this pandemic,” said Trudeau during his daily address to Canadians from the steps of Rideau Cottage Saturday. “We will do everything we can to ensure that Canada can come out of this situation in good shape, and we will always be seeking to support workers and families across the country.”

The layoffs, which will take place June 7, will affect a minimum of 19,000 staff and could go as high as 22,800.

In provincial news, Ontario reported 391 new cases of COVID-19 Saturday, along with 379 recoveries and 33 deaths.

In news closer to home, the daughter of an 81-year-old Canadian snowbird is distraught after her mother's 91-year-old American partner was denied entry into Canada, even though the couple share a seasonal residence on St. Joseph Island.

SooToday has a running list of community festivals and events that have been cancelled or postponed. Check it out here.

And finally, if you're in search of a feel-good moment during an ongoing pandemic, check out this video by Dr. Patience Simpson, who misses her patients so much, she wrote them a tune.
