COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

The province has reported a slight uptick in cases today, with 189 new confirmed cases. 

Public Health Ontario says nearly 40 per cent of those cases are people between the ages of 20 and 39.

The last case in Algoma was reported on June 19. There are currently no known active cases in the region.

Feds reveal details for student grants, internships amid COVID-19 pandemic

The federal government unveiled details today about a grant to help students during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The grant was initially announced in April, and details on who would be eligible and how the funding would would work has been greatly anticipated.

No new cases in Algoma region today

Here are the latest COVID-19 numbers from Algoma Public Health, updated at 9:45 a.m., June 25, 2020: 

  • 12,203 tested
  • 24 positive
  • 8,838 negative
  • 901 pending
  • 0 deceased
  • 24 resolved

Total confirmed cases by area of residence: 

  • 19 in Sault Ste. Marie and area, with evidence of community spread
  • 2 in central and east Algoma
  • 3 in Elliot Lake and area
  • 0 in north Algoma

Algoma Public Health's website indicates that pending and negative cases were last updated on June 17.

Immunocompromised business owners face tough reopening decisions

While many business owners have been eager to reopen as soon as possible, some face a very different reality, where reopening could truly be a life or death decision.

Contracting COVID-19 could be potentially fatal for Paula D’Agostino, but she may be left with no other choice but to reopen Big Guns Barbershop in the not-too-distant future. 

The owner and sole proprietor of the East Street business is severely immunocompromised due to a number of ongoing health issues, which is why D’Agostino has decided to keep her barber shop shuttered ever since Ontario initially ordered all non-essential businesses to close March 17.

Families start to visit with loved ones at long-term care homes again

Ontario Premier Doug Ford announced earlier this month the provincial government would allow a cautious restart, beginning June 18, of family visits to long term care homes, group homes and retirement homes not going through a COVID-19 outbreak.

Visits at Maple View (and other homes across Ontario) are being held outside under tents, with no hugging or indoor visitation allowed. Visitors are required to wear face shields, and hugging is not permitted.

Annual City Beautification Awards postponed

The annual contest recognizing local gardening efforts has been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. 

They cite difficulty managing the program this year given limits on capacity and physical distancing measures.
