COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

The province has reported 165 new cases of COVID-19 today. This marks a decrease from yesterday's surge of 203 cases.

Here in the Sault, Algoma Public Health (APH) reported two new case of the novel coronavirus on Thursday and Friday, bringing the region's total to 27.

One is resolved, leaving one active case in the region.

Legislation passed to extend some pandemic emergency measures over the next year

The Ontario Legislature has passed legislation allowing for the government to keep certain public health measures in place to address the threat of COVID-19 once the provincial declaration of emergency has ended.

According to a press release issued today, The Reopening Ontario Act, 2020, will provide the province with the necessary flexibility to address the ongoing risks and effects of COVID-19 as the province moves toward recovery.

The Act will come into force on July 24, 2020 to coincide with the termination of the declared provincial emergency.

Ontario first declared a state of emergency March 17 when the province's COVID-19 cases began to increase.

School board holds special meeting on plans for September

Algoma District School Board (ADSB) administrators and trustees gathered for a special board meeting Tuesday evening, held via teleconference, to pass two motions and discuss the changing-on-a-daily-basis nature of COVID-19 and how that will affect instruction for students with the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

No new cases in Algoma region today

Here are the latest COVID-19 numbers from Algoma Public Health, updated at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday: 

  • 18,599 tested
  • 27 positive
  • 17,591 negative
  • 981 pending
  • 0 deceased
  • 26 resolved

Total confirmed cases by area of residence: 

  • 22 in Sault Ste. Marie and area, with evidence of community spread
  • 2 in central and east Algoma
  • 3 in Elliot Lake and area
  • 0 in north Algoma

Indoor visits now permitted at North Shore Health Network's long-term care sites

The North Shore Health Network (NSHN) has updated its visitation policies for long-term care sites.

Getting back to the gym

Local gyms and health centres have begun to reopen, including the YMCA. CEO Tracey Cooke says the reopening has been cautious, with protections in place so all can feel safe while returning to the much-yearned-for reopening.
