COVID-19: Here's the situation in the Sault today

Algoma Public Health has confirmed two new cases last night and public exposure in Blind River

Algoma Public Health has not reported any new COVID-19 cases today.

However, two new cases were reported by the health unit last night, both from the central and east Algoma area. Both cases were linked to close-contact.

APH is advising anyone who visited Tim Hortons in Blind River, located at 43 Causley Street, either through walk-in or drive-thru on the following dates and times, of a potential low-risk exposure to COVID-19.

  • Jan 30, 2021, from 4 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Jan 31, 2021, from 4 a.m. - 12 p.m.
  • Feb 1, 2021, from 8 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.

Algoma District School Board has confirmed a potential COVID-19 exposure in the Blind River Public School community.

The health unit says it is conducting a careful investigation to identify close contacts. If you are a close contact, you will be notified with guidance on next steps.

Here are the latest COVID-19 numbers from Algoma Public Health, updated at 1:30 p.m.:

  • 86,870 tested
  • 169 confirmed 
  • 21 active case
  • 2 currently hospitalized
  • 148 resolved
  • 2 deceased

There are no active cases in non-Algoma residents temporarily in the region.

There is currently one active outbreak at an area institution at the F.J. Davey Home. It was declared on Friday.

According to data on howsmyflattening.ca, a University of Toronto-led website which collects and analyzes data from Ontario's COVID-19 cases, 62 per cent of ICU beds in Algoma Public Health's jurisdiction are currently occupied. None of the ICU beds are currently occupied by COVID-19 patients.

The data also describes the community risk level for COVID-19 in our region as 'low.'

Total confirmed cases by area of residence: 

  • 137 in Sault Ste. Marie and area, with evidence of community spread
  • 28 in central and east Algoma
  • Four in Elliot Lake and area
  • 0 in north Algoma

Comparatively, in Chippewa County, which covers Sault Ste. Marie Mich. and surrounding area, the COVID-19 data as of Tuesday states:

  • 1,710 cumulative positives
  • 1,500 cumulative recovered
  • 23 deaths
  • 3 cases currently hospitalized
