Given unprecedented demand, AlgomaOHT and others are 'constrained by the supply of vaccine ordered by the Ministry of Health'

Flu clinics scheduled for this weekend have been postponed, a news release issued today by the Algoma Ontario Health Team (AlgomaOHT) states.

Originally scheduled to take place at the GFL Memorial Gardens on Friday and Saturday, the AlgomaOHT says it has used its current allotment of the flu vaccine. Appointment lines will be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

"AlgomaOHT, alongside many groups across the city, have substantially increased access to the flu vaccine this year, and given the unprecedented demand, they are constrained by the supply of vaccine ordered by the Ministry of Health," the release states. "Individuals wanting to receive a flu vaccine are urged to monitor additional supply via pharmacies, primary care, or Algoma Public Health. A limited supply is available for higher-risk populations."

The postponement comes as pharmacy chain Rexall cancelled most of its flu-shot appointments in Ontario this week because of what the company calls a "provincewide supply issue."

And the Canadian Press reported that provinces have reported a significant uptick in demand, and while the Public Health Agency of Canada says it secured more flu vaccine than last year — 13.9 million doses compared to 11.2 million in 2019 — it is now working to secure more via other countries.
