SooToday received the following from the Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society in regards to the Ford Government's essential services announcement:

The Sault Ste. Marie Humane Society considers the health and safety of our clients, volunteers, staff and animals a priority and is taking every precaution to ensure that our employees remain healthy so they can continue to provide essential Animal Care and Control Services to our community and care for the animals currently at the shelter. As a result, we have taken the following actions:

  • Closed the shelter to the public;
  • Imposed restrictions on interactions with the public;
  • Limited the intake of animals to stray cats and dogs and those requiring emergency care or shelter;
  • Limited Animal Care & Control response to high priority/emergency calls;
  • Extended the deadline for purchasing your City of Sault Ste. Marie dog/cat license to June 30, 2020;
  • Encouraging the public to purchase dog/cat licenses on-line;
  • Increased cleaning and disinfecting of high touch surfaces has been implemented in addition to our standard disinfecting protocols to limit disease transmission
  • Not accepting the donation of any used goods at this time.

Over the next few days, please watch our web site and social media for further information on:

  • Adoptions by appointment;
  • Emergency pet food supplies for those in need (a limited supply will be available at the shelter and delivered to the Soup Kitchen today);
  • Amazon Wish List for donation of needed items.

In the event we reach our capacity for animals and/or our staffing levels become reduced, we are encouraging the public to consider submitting a foster application.

Shelter staff is on-site providing care to the animals and is available for inquiries by phone or email seven days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Do not hesitate to call if you or someone you know is struggling to provide care for their pets. If you have any questions or require assistance, please contact us at 705-949-3573 or ssmhsinfo@shaw.ca

We thank the public for their patience and cooperation while we adapt our operations to best meet the needs of our animals and community during this public health crisis.
