Ontario confirms record 1,050 COVID cases today

The province has also reported 14 deaths and 837 recoveries in today's epidemiological summary

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 1,050 new cases of COVID-19 today, the highest number of cases reported in a single day to date. 

The previous daily case record was set a little over a week ago with 1,042 cases reported on Oct. 25. The highest number of cases reported in a single day during the first wave was 749 cases on April 17.

The province has also confirmed 14 deaths today, including six people between 60 and 79 years old and eight people over the age of 80. Eight of the people who died were residents in long-term care homes. 

There have been 30 people hospitalized with the coronavirus since yesterday and two COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care since yesterday's report. The province's public health agency has noted 837 recoveries in today's summary. 

According to a breakdown of today's 1,050 cases, Ontario's four hot spot regions reported 730 cases, including 408 from Toronto, 212 from Peel, 76 from York and 34 from Ottawa. However, other regions not in Stage 2 modified restrictions have reported more than 50 new cases for today's report. Durham Region reported 57 new cases and Halton reported 86 cases. 

About 65 per cent of the cases reported (677 cases) today are individuals between 20 and 59 years old. 

The province has confirmed 25,279 tests have been processed since yesterday's update and there are 20,758 tests awaiting processing. Ontario labs have now processed 5.2 million COVID tests. The per cent positivity rate for Ontario is four per cent as of yesterday's data. 

Of the current 8,295 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, there are 357 people hospitalized with the virus. There are 73 COVID patients in intensive care units and 47 COVID patients on ventilators. 

Since the start of the pandemic, Public Health Ontario has confirmed 78,705 cases of COVID-19 and reported 67,244 recoveries and 3,166 deaths. 

The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units, at the time of today’s provincial update, is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 44 cases, rate of 38.5 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 46 cases. There are four known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 2.

  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 45 cases, rate of 34.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 47 cases. There are no known active cases.

  • Porcupine Health Unit: 99, rate of 118.6 per 100,000 population. There are six known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 1.

  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 128 cases, rate of 6.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 127 cases. There are four known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 1.

  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 17 cases, rate of 52 per 100,000. There are no known active cases. The last case was reported Oct. 5.

  • Northwestern Health Unit: 73 cases, rate of 83.3 per 100,000. The health unit has also reported 75 cases and two probable cases. There are four known active cases.

  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 117 cases, rate of 78 per 100,000. There is one known active case.
