Ontario reported 3,338 new COVID cases today

Public Health Ontario has reported 3,338 new cases of COVID-19 today, (Jan. 11).

The province has reported 29 deaths today. Of those, 14 were residents of long-term care homes.

One of the deaths reported today was an individual between 40 and 59 years old, seven were between 60 and 79 years old, and 21 were over the age of 80. 

Since yesterday, 102 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and seven COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

The Jan. 11 updates provided by the province's public health agency also reported the following data collected for Jan. 10:

  • 2,756 new recoveries
  • 1,563 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,483 reported yesterday. On weekends, more than 10 per cent of Ontario hospitals do not report bed census data, so today's report does not include all hospitalizations. 
  • There are 387 COVID patients in intensive care units (down from 388 yesterday) and 268 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 266 yesterday). 
  • 30,632 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 30,079 reported yesterday
  • The province reported 46,403 tests processed yesterday resulting in a 7.7 per cent positivity rate. The province's goal is three per cent. 
  • There is a backlog of 28,774 tests awaiting processing.
  • Of the 3,338 cases reported today, 931 are from Toronto, 531 are from Peel, 241 are from York Region, and 84 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 517 people under 20, 1,160 people between 20 and 39 years old, 910 people between 40 and 59 years old, 488 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 263 people over the age of 80.
  • There are 256 ongoing, active outbreaks at long-term care homes in the province, 159 active outbreaks at retirement homes, and 82 active outbreaks at hospitals. 
  • There were 8,859 doses of vaccines against COVID-19 administered on Jan. 10, down from 9,983 on Jan. 9.
  • As of 8 p.m. on Jan. 10, the province reports 122,105 doses of vaccine against COVID-19 have been administered.
  • There are 5,884 total vaccinations completed (both doses), which is unchanged from yesterday. The vaccine approved for use requires two doses given 21 days apart. 

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 219,120 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 183,476 recoveries and 5,012 deaths, of which 3,004 were individuals living in long-term care homes

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,474 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 159.6 cases per 100,000 people from Jan. 1 to Jan. 7, which is an increase of 19.9 per cent compared to Dec. 26 to Jan. 1 when the average weekly incidence rate was 133.1 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 127 cases, rate of 111 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 128 cases. There are 56 known active cases, including one person who is a non-Algoma resident temporarily in the region.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 169 cases, rate of  130.2 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 177 cases. There are 32 known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 160 rate of 191.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 164 cases. There are 33 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 351 cases, rate of 176.4 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 352 cases. There are 66 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 83 cases, rate of 253.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 84 cases. There are 10 known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 223 cases, rate of 254.3 per 100,000 people. There are 36 known active cases. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 658 cases, rate of 419. per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 670 cases. There are 74 known active cases.
