Ontario reports 192 COVID-19 cases today, plus 223 more previously unreported

Today and yesterday's update from Public Health Ontario included additional cases that were not immediately reported to public health

Public Health Ontario is again noting previously unreported cases of COVID-19 in today’s update.

The agency has reported 192 new cases of COVID-19 plus 223 cases that “were impacted by a laboratory-to-public health reporting delay.”

Overall, the total cases confirmed in the province rose by 415 today, bringing the cumulative total for the province to 30,617 cases.

The province is reporting 19 deaths today, including one person between the ages of 40 and 59, four people between the ages of 60 and 79, and 14 people over the age of 80.

Of the total number of cases reported in the province, 79.2 per cent are recovered (24,252), and 2,426 people have died, which is 7.9 per cent of the people who have tested positive for COVID-19 in Ontario.

There are 635 people hospitalized with 117 patients in intensive care and 92 patients on ventilators.

Since yesterday, Public Health Ontario has reported 19,374 more tests processed.

In Canada, as of yesterday, there were 95,057 confirmed and presumptive cases of COVID-19 reported to date, including 7,773 deaths (8 per cent) and 53,614 recoveries (56 per cent).

Of the total cases in the nation, 87 per cent of the deaths and 95 per cent of the cases are reported from Quebec and Ontario.

The breakdown by province according to Canada.ca as of June 6 is as follows:

  • Newfoundland and Labrador: 261 cases and three deaths
  • Prince Edward Island: 27 cases and zero deaths (no new cases in 14 days)
  • Nova Scotia: 1,058 cases and 61 deaths
  • New Brunswick: 136 cases and one death
  • Quebec: 52,624 cases and 4,970 deaths
  • Ontario: 30,202 cases and 2,407 deaths
  • Manitoba: 300 cases and seven deaths
  • Saskatchewan: 650 cases and 11 deaths
  • Alberta: 7,138 cases and 146 deaths
  • British Columbia: 2,632 cases and 167 deaths
  • Yukon: 11 cases and zero deaths
  • Northwest Territories: 5 cases and zero deaths (no new cases in 14 days)
  • Nunavut: Zero cases
  • Repatriated travellers: 13 cases

In Northern Ontario, the Thunder Bay District Health Unit has the highest number of confirmed cases. The Porcupine Health Unit, which covers Timmins and the surrounding area, still has the highest rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

Today's provincial report includes data from Jan. 15 to June 6 and includes the rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population. Data included on resolved cases and last known confirmed is from each health unit's respective website. The breakdown for Northern Ontario health units is:

  • Algoma Public Health - 21 cases, rate of 18.4 per 100,000 population. The last positive test was confirmed May 23. All of the known cases are resolved.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit - 27 cases, rate of 20.8 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 29 cases. Of those, 27 are resolved and there has been one virus-related death. There is one known active case, a woman aged 60 to 79 who is in hospital.
  • Porcupine Health Unit - 65, rate of 77.9 per 100,000 population. The last confirmed case was May 10. Of the confirmed cases, 57 are resolved and seven people have died. There is still one known active case of the virus.
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts - 64 cases, rate of 32.2 per 100,000 population. The last positive test was reported May 14. Two people have died, and the rest of the known cases are resolved.
  • Timiskaming Health Unit - 18 cases, rate of 55.1 per 100,000. The last positive tests were done April 28. All of the cases are resolved.
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit - 83 cases, rate of 55.3 per 100,000 population. The health unit has 84 cases listed. Of those, 80 are resolved and one person has died. There are three known active cases, one which is hospitalized.
  • Northwestern Health Unit - 23 cases, rate of 26.2  per 100,000 population. The health unit has 22 cases listed, 21 of which are resolved.

The Ontario rate of infection per 100,000 population is 206.
