Ontario reports 948 new COVID cases today

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 948 new cases of COVID-19 today, and reported 826 recoveries and seven deaths. 

The deaths reported today include two people between the ages of 60 and 79 years old, and five people over the age of 80. Three of the people who died were living at long-term care homes. 

The province has reported 35 COVID cases have been hospitalized and seven COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units since yesterday's report. 

Of the 948 cases reported today, 382 people are between 20 and 39 years old, and 284 people are between 40 and 59 years old. There were 77 new cases reported in school-age children including 21 cases in kids aged 4 to 8 years old, 31 kids aged nine to 13 years old, and 25 youth aged 14 to 17 years old. 

There have been 71 new school-related cases reported by the province since Friday, including 41 student cases, eight staff cases and 22 unidentified cases. There have now been 2,230 school-related cases reported at 558 schools across the province. One school is closed because of COVID-19. 

According to a breakdown by region provided by the health unit, today's report includes 64 cases from Ottawa, 269 cases from Peel, 315 cases from Toronto, and 81 cases from York. 

While the average incidence rate for the province is 522.4 cases per 100,000 people, all four of those hotspot regions have case incidence rates above the provincial average, ranging from 563 cases per 100,000 people in York Region, to 893.2 cases per 100,000 people in Peel. 

Since yesterday's report, Public Health Ontario confirmed there have been 27,908 COVID tests processed and there are 15,397 tests awaiting processing. 

Of the 8,096 active, lab-confirmed cases in Ontario, at least 328 people are hospitalized with 75 COVID patients in intensive care units and 45 COVID patients on ventilators. 

The province has confirmed 77,655 cases of COVID-19 in Ontario since the start of the pandemic, and has reported 66,407 cases (85.5 per cent) as recovered and 3,152 cases (4.1 per cent) ending in death. 

There are active COVID-19 outbreaks at 74 long-term care homes, 51 retirement homes, and 19 hospitals in Ontario, according to the province's public health agency. 

The breakdown for the Northern Ontario health units, at the time of today’s provincial update, is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 44 cases, rate of 38.5 per 100,000 population. There are three known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 1.

  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 45 cases, rate of 34.7 per 100,000 population. The health unit has reported 47 cases. There are no known active cases.

  • Porcupine Health Unit: 99, rate of 118.6 per 100,000 population. There are seven known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 1.

  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 127 cases, rate of 63.8 per 100,000 population. There are seven known active cases. The last case was reported Nov. 1.

  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 17 cases, rate of 52 per 100,000. There are no known active cases. The last case was reported Oct. 5.

  • Northwestern Health Unit: 73 cases, rate of 83.3 per 100,000. The health unit has also reported two probable cases. There are three known active cases.

  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 117 cases, rate of 78 per 100,000. There are three known active cases.
