Ontario reports record 3,328 new COVID cases today

The province reported 56 deaths and 107 new hospitalizations today

Public Health Ontario has reported a record 3,328 new COVID-19 cases today. It is the first time the province has reported case counts in the 3,000s. 

The province has also indicated a jump in the number of tests processed for today's report with 63,858 tests completed compared to between 34,00 and 41,000 over the past five days. 

The province reported 56 deaths in today's update. Of those, 39 were residents of long-term care homes. One of the deaths reported was an individual between 20 and 39 years old, one was between 40 and 59 years old, 17 were between 60 and 79 years old, and 37 were over the age of 80. 

Since yesterday, 107 people have been hospitalized with COVID-19, and 25 COVID patients have been admitted to intensive care units.

Today's update provided by the province's public health agency today also reported the following:

  • 2,213 new recoveries 
  • 1,235 people are currently hospitalized with COVID-19 in Ontario, up from 1,177 reported yesterday. 
  • There are 337 COVID patients in intensive care units (up from 323 yesterday) and 210 COVID patients on ventilators (up from 204 yesterday)
  • 21,617 current active cases in Ontario, which is up from 20,558 reported yesterday
  • The province has reported 63,858 tests have been processed for today's update, resulting in a 5.7 per cent positivity rate. The province's goal is three per cent. 
  • Of the 3,328 cases reported today, 888 are from Toronto, 431 are from Peel, 418 are from York Region, and 83 are from Simcoe-Muskoka.
  • Based on case data reported today, the new cases include 465 people under 20, 1,123 people between 20 and 39 years old, 1,037 people between 40 and 59 years old, 502 people between 60 and 79 years old, and 200 people over the age of 80.

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 182,159 cases of COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, and reported 156,012 recoveries and 4,530 deaths, of which 2,777 were individuals living in long-term care homes

The cumulative average incidence rate in the province is 1,225.5 cases per 100,000 people in Ontario. The weekly incidence rate in Ontario is 103 cases per 100,000 people from Dec. 21 to Dec. 27, which is down by 4.2 per cent compared to Dec. 15-21 when the average weekly incidence rate was 107.5 cases per 100,000 people.

In Northern Ontario, the breakdown of Public Health Ontario data is:

  • Algoma Public Health: 65 cases, rate of 56.8 per 100,000 people. There are three known active cases.
  • North Bay Parry Sound District Health Unit: 126 cases, rate of  97.1 per 100,000 people. There are 11 known active cases.
  • Porcupine Health Unit: 129, rate of 154.6 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 131 cases and one probable case. There are 11 known active cases. 
  • Public Health Sudbury and Districts: 274 cases, rate of 137.7 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 275 cases. There are 17 known active cases. 
  • Timiskaming Health Unit: 70 cases, rate of 214.1 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 72 cases. There are 23 known active cases.
  • Northwestern Health Unit: 163 cases, rate of 185.9 per 100,000 people. The health unit has also reported four probable cases. There are 19 known active cases. 
  • Thunder Bay District Health Unit: 580 cases, rate of 386.8 per 100,000 people. The health unit has reported 585 cases. There are 68 known active cases.

The province will not be providing COVID-19 updates on Jan. 1. Data will be posted the following day.
