KC Security Services has been retained by the Downtown Association to perform COVID-19 mobile patrols on Queen Street.

Downtown business owners and landlords were advised this week that the KC patrols started on Sunday.

They'll continue until at least May 1, with a possible contract extension to be determined by need.

Downtown Association members have been advised to contact Sault Ste. Marie Police Service if they witness occurrences.

Police Chief Hugh Stevenson told SooToday's James Hopkin last week that 39 break-ins were reported in the city between March 30 and April 16, 15 of them at businesses.

During the same period last year, only two commercial break-ins occurred.

Stevenson said police have stepped up patrols and visibility citywide, with a special focus on businesses closed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The Downtown Association distributed the following COVID crime-fighting and property management tips this week to its membership:

  • remove all valuables from storefront displays
  • remove all cash from cash registers and leave it open with the cash tray out and visibly empty
  • ensure alarm systems are working and that all contact lists are up-to-date
  • post on doors/windows that the premises are monitored by an alarm company and that no money is kept onsite
  • clean all windows and floors before leaving and note when you've done so (have a log) as this will help prevent damage or potential tampering to windows and doors
  • keep track of when you check (have a log), and go at different times
  • if neighbouring businesses are deemed essential and have remained open, request that they be vigilant to the traffic and activity around your business.
  • ensure garbage and recycling containers and sinks are emptied and clean to prevent rodents and insects
  • safely seal any holes/opening in the facade so that rodents/insects cannot enter
  • check fire alarms and sprinkler systems
  • conduct regular checks on sump pumps
