September bridge traffic down by 89 per cent over last year

A news release issued today by the International Bridge Administration reports that bridge traffic for the year up to Sept. 30 has decreased by more than 70 per cent.

One-way crossings in September this year dropped by 89 percent compared to September 2019.

Due to COVID-19, International Bridge traffic was restricted to essential travel only on March 20.

Full text of the news release follows:  

Traffic for the calendar year-to-date on Sept. 30, 2020, is 303,418. This represents a year-to-date decrease of 70.8 per cent. The bridge has processed 102.98 million bridge crossings since 1962.

The International Bridge Administration today announced that one-way traffic crossings of the International Bridge at Sault Ste. Marie totalled 13,501 for the month of September 2020. This figure represents a decrease of 89.0 per cent, a difference of 109,127 crossings as compared to September 2019.

An analysis of traffic statistics for the month reveals the following:

The International Bridge self-funds with toll revenue all operational costs. Operational costs include the bridge structure, maintenance facilities, the Bridge Authority toll plaza, and building maintenance and support costs for the Canada Border Services Agency facility.
