INSIDE THE VILLAGE: At Metroland Media, print is officially dead

This week on the podcast: Dozens of community newspapers in Ontario, including some of the country's oldest titles, are suddenly no more. The good news? Researchers may have found Bigfoot

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode: The sudden demise of dozens of Ontario newspapers.

In a dark day for local journalism, Toronto Star publisher Nordstar Capital LP announced last Friday that its regional newspaper business, Metroland Media Group, would be placed into bankruptcy protection. The move wiped out 605 jobs — including 68 of the company’s 200 journalists — and marked the abrupt end of the print edition for 71 community newspapers read by a combined 4.2 million people.

Among the casualties was The Perth Courier, Canada's second-oldest local newspaper, first published in 1834.

For Village Media — the company that operates this local news website, and nearly two dozen others — our mission remains the same: to strengthen the cities and towns we serve by providing our readers with free, trusted reporting from local journalists who actually live in your community. Born digital, we focus on the stories that matter most: the ones right in your neighbourhood.

Also on this week's podcast: Our favourite Sasquatch hunter is back — and he insists he has some new evidence to prove that Bigfoot exists. Check out what Ryan Willis has found in advance of his new series, Sasquatch University, which hits Wild TV on Sept. 25.

Hosted by Scott Sexsmith and Michael Friscolanti, the Editor-in-Chief of Village Media, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across our chain of Ontario newsrooms. Produced by Derek Turner, the program also explores bigger-picture issues that impact people across the province.
