McDougall Energy is saying thank you to the health-care workers, first responders and transportation drivers on the front line during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Sault Ste. Marie-based fuel distributor said it’s offering free meals and drinks to those workers visiting McDougall’s retail and gasoline locations across Northern Ontario.

“Health-care workers and first responders need a break, as they spend their days caring for others who need them during this health crisis, and transportation drivers are on the road, often challenged to find a safe spot to rest and eat while they are away from home,” said Scott Neufeld, the company’s vice-president of auto market, in an April 6 news release.

“This is our small way of saying thank you and showing our appreciation for the dedication of essential workers providing care, protecting our communities, and keeping essential goods moving.”

The company said 12 retail and gasoline locations are participating in the initiative.

Front-line workers visiting the Nairn Centre Esso – Jeremy’s Country Restaurant, west of Sudbury, can receive a free meal and drink, while those visiting gas bars in Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Blind River, and Elliot Lake are being offered a drink and snack.

The offer also applies to McDougall’s gas bar in Carlton Place, near Ottawa.

Headquartered in Sault Ste. Marie, McDougall has been a family-owned and operated business since 1949, and is currently in its third generation of family ownership.

The company also commended its own team of workers delivering fuel and other products for going “above and beyond” to continue to do their jobs during this time.

McDougall said protecting the health and safety of its workers and customers was its “top priority.”

Measures taken include extensive cleaning of equipment and on site, physical distancing with staff and patrons, using gloves or paper towels when handling gas nozzles, and encouraging the use of plastic pay methods, including pay-at-the-pump or using debit, credit and Speedpass+ inside stores.
