A reel Canadian celebration

In 2014, Reel Canada launched National Canadian Film Day to celebrate our nation’s cinematic achievements and cultural diversity.

That inaugural affair featured screenings, discussions, and events in 44 communities from coast to coast, including Sault Ste. Marie.

National Canadian Film Day, celebrated this year on April 20, has grown to include more than 170 nation-wide film screenings, all of which are free to enjoy.

Locally, Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster will screen at the Sault Ste. Marie Centennial Library at 6 p.m.

Filmed in Sault Ste. Marie in February 2011, Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster is based on the true escapades of notorious Canadian bank robber and aspiring actor Edwin Alonzo Boyd.

It stars Scott Speedman as Boyd, and features Kevin Durand (Lost, Vikings, The Strain, Resident Evil: Retribution), Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes, Black Box, True Detective), and Brian Cox (Deadwood, X-Men 2, The Bourne Identity and Supremacy, Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

Edwin Boyd: Citizen Gangster earned director Nathan Morlando the jury prize for Best Canadian First Feature in September 2011 at the Toronto International Film Festival.

“The 2016 National Canadian Film Day event is intended to build awareness, educate and provide Canadian-based family entertainment through the showing of cinematic stories,” states a news release issued on behalf of the Sault Ste. Marie Local Immigration Partnership (LIP). “Through Canadian film, LIP hopes to create awareness of the cultural diversity in our vast region, as well encourage the uniting of all members of our community.”
