Annual juried exhibition opens in Alberta House

SAULT STE. MARIE, MI - Artist’s Choice IV, the annual juried exhibition of the Olive Craig Gallery, will fill both Alberta House galleries during April, opening Friday, April 1 and closing April 30.

The multi-media exhibit showcases the work of Michigan artists from the Indiana border to Hancock as well as work by Algoma artists.

Viewers will find paintings by Beverley Benne, Phyllis Dorman, Judy Henderson, Sue Johnson, Ken Miller, Hilkka Pellikka, and Rita Varty, all of whom are Alberta House juried show veterans.

Painters new to the show, but not to Alberta House are Doug Chambers and Anne Murphy Schaaf, with paintings and veteran juried show exhibitor Otto Bacon with iron work.

Norris Seward is in with photographs, Ginny Johnson with porcelain bowls and Paulette Attie with a hooked rug.

One of the special pleasures of a juried show is the new artists it brings in—new not in the sense of inexperienced, but new to Alberta House.

This show includes paintings by Laura Gaunt of Cedarville and Andreaka Jump and Linda Pearl of the Sault; photographs by Brian Hunt and Scott Laursen; needle felting by Mary Baron and Jennifer Kenney; alcohol ink work by Diane Krips-Mays and ceramics by Sandra Norris Palmore.

The public is cordially invited to attend the show’s reception and awards ceremony on Saturday, April 9, from 1 to 3 p.m.

To be awarded is the $300 First Place Award, the $200 Second Place Award and the $100 Third Place Award, as well as Purchase Awards by Central Savings Bank, Pam and Kevin Cooper and War Memorial Hospital.

The judge for Artist’s Choice IV is Jasmina Jovanovic, director of the Art Gallery of Algoma.

More information and show photographs can be found in the April Alberta House News, downloadable on the Sault Area Arts Council website (www.saultarts.org).

Regular hours in Alberta House are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4  p.m.

Alberta House is located just a quarter block south of Portage and the Soo Locks, at 217 Ferris Street in Sault, Michigan.

Admission is free of charge.
