GALLERY: Bon Soo's 61st carnival kicks off with a bang

The Canal District was packed with families on Friday night as the 61st annual Bon Soo Winter Carnival got underway.

Lots of activities, games, and treats were enjoyed by hundreds, including axe throwing, bouncy slides, maple taffy making from Hogan's Homestead, carnival rides, tattoos from Discover the Canvas, Beaver Tails, and Roolz Vending.

Emceed by Tim Murphy, the opening ceremonies featured a fun lineup of entertainment from members of The Saturday Nights, Strong Minds, and YMCA. 

A number of local dignitaries and special guests also shared messages of support for the festival, including Mayor Matthew Shoemaker, ACCANO president Dave Mornix, Tenaris president Martin Castro, Batchewana First Nation Chief Mark McCoy, Thrive Tours co-owner Brad Robinson, and Bon Soo organizer Josh Ingram.

Not to be forgotten of course, Mr. Bon Soo was on-site throughout the evening to take pictures with the kids.

Following the opening ceremonies, a stunning fireworks display brought the "oohs" and "ahhs" and lasted nearly 20 minutes.
