Cultural event at the Marconi included music, dancing and a feast

Members of the Sault Malayalee Association held an Onam celebration entitled ‘Aaravam 2023’ at the Marconi Multicultural Event Centre beginning on Saturday morning.

The Malayalee community comes from the Indian state of Kerala, located in southwestern India.

There are approximately 500 Malayalee people either living or studying in Sault Ste. Marie, said Jinse Sunny, Sault Malayalee Association general secretary, in an interview with SooToday.

Onam is a cherished festival enjoyed by the Malayalee community around the world, celebrating harvest season.

Saturday’s festival, scheduled to run until 6 p.m., included music, dance, a vegetarian Onam feast, a fashion show and activities including a Tug of War event to be held in the Marconi’s parking lot.

The event was open to people from outside the Malayalee community to enjoy and had been advertised on social media.

Ward 3 Coun. Angela Caputo, serving as Acting Mayor, addressed Malayalee community members with words of welcome on behalf of the City of Sault Ste. Marie.

Saturday’s festival was the first of its kind for the Sault’s Malayalee community and organizers plan to hold another next year.
