GALLERY: This is how Saultites celebrate Italy's vibrant culture

The familiar sights, sounds, and smells of one of the Sault's most prolific cultures has returned to the Roberta Bondar Pavilion this weekend.

This year's Giovanni's Italian Festival has brought thousands together under the big tent for an afternoon of live music, games, dancing, and of course — all those tasty Italian dishes and sweets.

Rooted in tradition, the festival honours the contributions of Italian immigrants in Sault Ste. Marie, celebrating their resilience and values.

Outgrowing its former location at the Giovanni's parking lot, the Italian Festival has been hosted by the Cavaliere family at the pavilion for two years now. 

New to the cultural celebration this year is Carmen Cavaliere's custom-built porchetta roaster. The gigantic piece of machinery can hold up to 200 pounds of pork with a cook time between five and six hours at 400 degrees Fahrenheit. 

That savoury, slow-cooked porchetta should be ready for eating around supper time.

Vendors, kids' activities, and draw prizes are also available on-site throughout the day.

For readers still hoping to attend the event, RPM will take the stage with a lively set at 4 p.m., followed by an Elvis Presley tribute performance at 6 p.m.

Prizes will be drawn at 7:30 p.m. before festival main act Fantasia hits the stage tonight at 8:30 p.m.
