Seven Generations Education Institute, an Aboriginal-owned post-secondary school in Kenora, Ont., is hosting a virtual evening with former NHL player, head coach, philanthropist and Sault native Ted Nolan. The online event will be free of charge and held on April 13 at 7:30 p.m. Participation is open to anyone who would like to join.

Nolan will discuss what it means to be a leader as part of the Seven Generations Education Institute speaker series.

Nolan grew up playing minor hockey in Sault Ste. Marie and Kenora, Ont. before getting drafted to the Detroit Red Wings in 1978. He then went on to play for the Pittsburgh Penguins and later coached for the Buffalo Sabres, New York Islanders and the Latvian Men’s National Ice Hockey Team in the 2014 Sochi Olympics. He was also the head coach for the Soo Greyhounds in the OHL from 1988-1994.

“Hockey is what I do, it is not who I am,” is something Nolan always says. Nolan is grateful for the opportunities hockey has created in his life, and most importantly, the opportunity it has created for him to become a positive role model and inspiration for First Nations people all across Canada, the event page on Facebook reads. With his wife Sandra and two sons Brandon and Jordan, Nolan dreams of Indigenous self-sufficiency and a day when First Nations will take their rightful place in Canada.

Registration for the virtual evening can be found online
