Things really heated up Saturday night at the 2017 Northern Lights Festival Boréal Meltdown, as local folk singer and guitar aficionado M.D. Dunn was crowned the winner.

The Meltdown is a showcase event whereby emerging musicians compete for paid spots at Sudbury’s annual Northern Lights Festival Boréal.

The show was jammed packed with outstanding showcases of northern Ontario’s emerging talent; from the nostalgic, soothing sounds of Jackson Reed, to the raw power pop bangers served by rock band, The Din.

“This was our first time doing an NLFB event in Sault Ste. Marie,” stated Executive/Artistic Director, Max Merrifield. “It was a real treat to watch some of the Sault’s best and meet them afterwards.”

With the success of the Meltdown in the Sault, NLFB hopes that they will be able to continue events like these in the future. The SSM Meltdown is part of the iconic festival’s efforts to do further outreach across Northeastern Ontario, and tap into the music scenes of cities outside of Sudbury.

M.D. Dunn has been performing for more than a quarter century. His most recent album, Solace, came out in 2016.

Dunn is also an author; his most recently published book, Even the Weapons, came out in 2014 on Buschek Books. He has performed across the country, and his music has been played on CBC, NPR, and WPR.

Northern Lights Festival Boréal 46 takes place July 7-9 this summer at Bell Park in Sudbury, Ont. Headliners include Yukon Blonde, Whitehorse and many more. Stay tuned for upcoming line-up announcements and more. For more info, visit nlfb.ca.
