‘Music at the Rapids’ comes to Algoma U

The Ontario Registered Music Teachers Association (ORMTA) and the Algoma University music program are proud to present “Music at the Rapids: A Celebration of Canadian Music in Sault Ste. Marie”, on Nov. 27 at 2 p.m. in the Shingwauk Auditorium on the University’s campus.

“Music at the Rapids: A Celebration of Canadian Music in Sault Ste. Marie” is a student recital featuring performances of works by Canadian composers.

Students from ORMTA member studios and Northern Arts Academy will grace the Shingwauk stage. The afternoon will also feature two exciting new student drum groups from White Pines Collegiate and Vocational School: Braided Sweet Grass Singers and The Obadjiwan Singers.

Algoma University Musicians-in-Residence, the Duo Turgeon, will offer a one piano, four-hand duet by Violet Archer. Collaborative piano support of student performances will be provided by Dr. Anne-Louise Turgeon.

“We are pleased to host ‘Music at the Rapids. This splendid afternoon of music-making will showcase the calibre of talent in Sault Ste. Marie and the expressive breadth of Canadian music," said Dr. Edward Turgeon, Chair of Music and Visual Arts at Algoma U and member of Duo Turgeon.

"As a proud new member of ORMTA, I look forward to being with great colleagues and appreciating the artistry of their stellar students. Special thanks to my dear friend and colleague Ms. Dale Innes for bringing this event to Algoma University. I look forward to the prospects for more fruitful collaboration with ORMTA in the years to come, especially now that the University houses a superb new concert instrument. Audience members are encouraged to arrive early, as there is a limited seating in the Shingwauk Auditorium.”

The recital features Algoma University’s newly acquired Yamaha C7X concert grand piano, arriving from Vancouver only three days prior to the event.
