New high school rock band ready to roll

CRUSADE will make its public debut Friday at St. Mary's 'A Night for Music' event

A new rock band at St. Mary's College is making its public debut this week.

CRUSADE will be the headline act Friday at A Night of Music, an event supports the school's music program.

The band will be performing a six-song set for the concert, which kicks off at 7 p.m. at St. Mary's.

The band performed for students in local elementary schools in December to promote the school's 'Heaven Cent' campaign. Friday's performance will include songs from the late 70s and early 80s.

“I’m really excited for A Night of Music, especially since we’ve been working so hard," said Grade 10 student, Briannan Gouza, in a news release issued by the Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board. "I have been playing guitar for eight and a half years now. I think my favourite song is our Sweet Home Alabama and All Summer Long mashup because it’s a fun song to play. I like how we started playing it as a joke. Now, it’s part of our set list. I’m slightly nervous, but I’m way more excited."

Alexia Rodrigues-Larrondo, a newcomer student who is in Grade 9, will be performing one of her songs in Spanish.

"I’m going to be singing a few different songs," she says. "I’m nervous for my family and friends to come. My first time singing on a stage was for our talent show in December and I was feeling nervous but now my approach is if I did it once I can do it again."

Also performing at the concert will be two special guests, both of them SMC alumni who are now studying music at Algoma University: Tianna Legacy and Ryan Mauro.

Tickets to A Night of Music are just $10, with children under ten admitted free. All proceeds go toward the SMC music program.
