Seedy Saturday sprouts a big return at United Baptist (Photo gallery)

The Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society invited hundreds to the United Baptist Church as their annual event brought together farms, seed suppliers, and plant educators from across the district

Members and volunteers with the Sault Ste. Marie Horticultural Society are at United Baptist Church today for their annual Seedy Saturday.

Running from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., the event encourages locals to save and share seeds, as well as browse from a number of local and out-of-town seed producers.

SSM Horticultural Society president Andrea Aubertin says this is the first Seedy Saturday they’ve hosted since the onset of the pandemic, and they’re excited to finally be back in person.

“It’s really nice to be out of COVID and have events like this again,” she says. “We saw a lot more people getting involved with gardening during the pandemic.”

The SSM Horticultural Society has hosted Seedy Saturday for the past 20 years.

Taking place every hour, Saturday’s event included presentations from local gardening establishments like Eden’s Reptiles, New North Greenhouses, and Superior Gardener.

Local seed suppliers included New North Greenhouses and Superior Gardener, and out-of-town seed suppliers were Three Forks Farms, Northern Wildflowers, and UrbanTomato.

Red Roof was on-site selling an assortment of honey, Clean North was there to educate the public on composting, and Algoma Farmers Market had a variety of seeds and plants available for purchase.

The Soup Witch provided attendees with lunch, and children also got in on the fun with a variety of activities.

“It’s a great way to get people together and talk about gardening with like-minded people,” Aubertin says. “We have a really strong community for gardening here in the Sault.”

Aubertin says the SSM Horticultural Society’s membership is at the highest its ever been with over 250 members.

12-month memberships are $15, which will provide planters with discounts at several gardening centres across the Algoma region.
