VIDEO: Korah students produce virtual rendition of song from ‘Les Mis'

School plans release of full musical in September

With a second consecutive school year affected by COVID-19 restrictions, the music department at Korah Collegiate has rallied to produce a musical presentation for community members to enjoy on YouTube in the absence of live performances.

“‘Not being heard is no reason for silence,’” said Denine Williams, Korah Collegiate music department head in an intro to the video.

That’s a quote from 19th century French novelist Victor Hugo, who penned Les Miserables.

Drawing inspiration from that quote, Williams and her students refused to be silenced by COVID-19 restrictions on live performances and, using available technology, produced a virtual performance of the Epilogue from Les Miserables.

“Korah is in the process of editing over 1,000 files towards the final virtual production of Les Miserables. The Korah Musical Theatre Program is proud to present the Epilogue as a sneak preview on YouTube,” Williams told SooToday.

“We are very proud to announce that you will be able to view our one of a kind Les Mis production via a private YouTube link to be released in September 2021.”

Les Miserables has been adapted into several different movies, plays and musicals since its original publication in 1862.

Meanwhile, the Korah Music Department has set up a donation page in lieu of ticket sales for its virtual 2021 production of Les Miserables.

Parents, teachers and any Algoma District School Board (ADSB) employee with a student in the system able to register on the school cash system can make donations through the ADSB’s EDSBY page.

That online option is available until Sept. 17, 2021.

Anyone wishing to donate by cheque is asked to hold off until September, as only online donations are being received at this time.

Cheques should be postdated to Sept. 1.
