ALGOMA UNIVERSITY

Algoma University's Visual Art Program is back on campus with students working in new studios. To celebrate, the Fine Arts Student Society of Algoma University (FASS) is hosting an art show and sale on Friday, Dec. 1.
The Small Treasures Open House Show and Sale will feature student artwork, handcrafts and silent auctions of artwork donated by artists/faculty members. Students from the Music Program will be showcasing their talent via performances throughout the day.
“The primary reason for the event is to celebrate our return ‘home’ to the Algoma U campus, and to welcome the whole community to come and see the new space,” says Noni Boyle, associate professor in the Visual Art Program. “The second part of the event is our annual Small Treasures Show and Sale. This is a fundraising event for FASS and will help support various activities, including a March trip to Ottawa to visit the National Gallery.”
Boyle went on to explain how the new studios have been developed with function in mind; the printmaking facilities are all located conveniently together with space for all related processes (digital, intaglio, lithography, silkscreen, relief and photo-based).
There are two multi-use studios so students will always have a place to work even when other classes are taking place. There is a 3-D practices room equipped with woodworking tools, allowing for various construction processes. Finally, a media room serves as a lecture room and critique space.
“The students appreciate not having to take a bus between classes and we are told that they feel much more safe and secure when working on evenings and weekends,” says Boyle. “Being located on campus means they can easily take advantage of available hours to be in the studios. Not only does this help advance their work, but it really develops community among the students.”
The event will run from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday and will take place in the art studios located in the lower level of the Convergence Centre building on the Algoma University campus. The community are invited to come and tour the studios and enjoy refreshments and music.
