Today will be the second day of the The Sault Ste. Marie SSM Himalayan Balsam Community Project.
Himalayan Balsam is an invasive plant that can contribute to the erosion of banks along streams and rivers. Bank erosion disrupts ecosystems and causes sediment buildup in water drainage channels.
Sootoday cameras met up with Derissa Vincentini, Community Science Coordinator of the Invasive Species Centre, who showed how to identify these plants and how volunteers deal with them during these 'pulling' events.
Today's event will be held at Drake Street Park from noon until 4 pm. The public is invited to come out and join in the activity.
If you happen to miss today, fret not, as there are four events left to attend as well as ways to participate from home. Click the link here for more information on how to contribute to the project
