ALGOMA UNIVERSITY
*************************
This spring, Algoma University will be offering a climate change course from May 28 - June 1, 2018, as part of its Geography Spring Institute.

Students in the spring institute will earn three credits that can be used toward an Algoma University credential or a National Aboriginal Lands Management Association (NALMA) Professional Land Management Certificate.

The course, Climate Change and Communities: Vulnerabilities, Impacts, and Adaptations, will provide students with an introduction to climate change within a geographical context, using a hands-on approach.

By bringing together science and Traditional Knowledge, students will explore climate change from broad perspectives by including guest speakers, field trips, videos, group activities, and readings. Students will be introduced to climate processes, including what climate change is and how it works.

The course will review climate impacts, such as forest fires, flooding, fisheries, and water resources. Students will learn about vulnerability assessments and adaptation planning to begin to strategize about appropriate responses to climate change. Students will be encouraged to explore climate change with respect to their own communities.

NALMA members are also eligible for one of 10 hefty scholarships, valued at $2,500. The scholarships are being made available by NALMA in an effort to help educate and train Indigenous peoples from across Canada on climate change.

The spring institute will run Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. The registration deadline is May 14. The cost for the institute is $916.11 plus a $50 registration fee for non-Algoma U students.

An orientation and barbecue for all participants will be held on May 27 from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. in The Speakeasy.

A special student success workshop titled Zhii taadaa (Let’s Get Ready), is available for new students to prepare them for university-level learning. The workshop will be held on May 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. No registration is required. This workshop is free of charge.
