Two local companies have been awarded city contracts for summer paving and construction work worth a combined $4.7 million.

Pioneer Construction Inc. will be paid $2.3 million to resurface Wallace Terrace from Goulais Avenue to Korah Road.

Ellwood Robinson Inc. was low bidder at $2.4 million for a mixed bag of construction and paving jobs.

Those projects include the following:

  • resurfacing of Second Line West from Goulais Avenue to 748 Second Line West
  • St. George’s Avenue from Grand Boulevard to Maple Street
  • construction of a Hub Trail spoke on Second Line from Carmen’s Way to Peoples Road
  • construction of the Hub Trail on Mark Street from Lake Street to Anna McCrea Public School
  • construction of a sidewalk on Pine Street from 58 Pine Street to Shore Drive
  • sanitary lateral repairs on St. George's Avenue and Second Line
  • surface treatment of various locations within the city

"Staff are finalizing the funding agreement details with Infrastructure Canada to pay for 60 per cent of the work associated with the Hub Trail," said Dan Perri, municipal services and design engineer, in a report to city council.

"The remaining 40 per cent of the funds up to $540,000 have been committed by council as part of the 2023 capital budget. A report for the agreement will be coming to council at a later date," Perri said.

"Staff have discussed this with the contractor and the Hub Trail work is listed as a provisional item. Should the funding agreement and associated funds not materialize, staff will utilize approved funding sources to complete the work outlined in this report."

Unsuccessful bidder on both the miscellaneous paving project and the Wallace Terrace resurfacing job was Avery Construction Ltd.

Some other road reconstruction and resurfacing projects planned for this summer:

  • reconstruction of Lake Street from Queen Street to Bellevue Park entrance
  • reconstruction of Spruce Street from Railroad Avenue to Wilcox Avenue
  • reconstructing Stanley Street from Pine Street to Elizabeth Street
  • reconstruction of Queen Street from Elgin Street to Brock Street
  • resurfacing of Cooper Street (Rossmore Road to Korah Road)
  • resurfacing of Base Line (Airport Road to 720 metres west of Airport Road)
