Algoma Steel has donated $250,000 to support the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA in its drive to raise $1.5-million. The lead gift in the capital campaign will be $50,000 a year over the next five years.

This significant contribution marks the beginning of a vital journey for the YMCA as it fights for its very existence, says a news release. The
multi-year campaign, called A Bridge to Our Future, will be "crucial for the YMCA to secure its sustainability and ensure it remains a viable community resource for years to come," the release said.

“We are incredibly grateful to Algoma Steel for their generous pledge of $250,000 over five years," said Elise Schofield, Sault Ste. Marie YMCA Board Chair. "This donation will have a substantial impact on our ability to provide essential services, from child care and summer camps to health and fitness programs, to upgrades in capital infrastructure.

“The YMCA is more than just a gym; it's a charitable organization dedicated to enhancing the well-being of our community. Every membership and every donation helps us support local families, ensuring that everyone has access to the opportunities and resources they need to ignite their potential.”

The YMCA has reached a critical juncture in the history of the organization. Faced with losing the YMCA, a groundswell of encouragement from members of the community, along with an investment by an unnamed charity organization, the Sault Ste. Marie YMCA has been afforded the opportunity to secure its future, added the release. The YMCA is committed to raising $1.5 million so it can continue  to help the community of Sault Ste. Marie and surrounding area shine through essential programs and services.

"Algoma Steel is proud to partner with our local YMCA chapter in Sault Ste. Marie to support its mission of fostering healthy living and community well-being. This sponsorship aligns with our commitment to building better lives and enhancing the quality of life for individuals and families in our community,” said Algoma Steel CEO Michael Garcia. “Together, we aim to create a stronger, more connected community through accessible programs and services that promote physical, mental,  and social health.”

In addition, Algoma Steel has invested in the health and wellness of their employees by offering a $10 discount off payroll deduction to any of their staff who
purchase a Y membership.
