Algoma University is hosting its 30th annual Student Awards Ceremony tonight at the Quattro Hotel and Conference Centre, recognizing the academic achievements of student recipients, and the donations presented by the benefactors.

The annual ceremony brings together donors and student recipients to announce the funding for the 2023-24 academic year, totalling more than $17 million, the university said in a news release.

More than 6,500 Algoma U students have received a scholarship or bursary for their dedication, perseverance, and excellence in their academic endeavours and community leadership initiatives, the university said.

“At Algoma University, we embrace the profound notion of ‘impact’," said Algoma University president Asima Vezina. "Through their generosity, our donors have an incredible impact. They empower students to pursue their dreams and unlock their full potential.

“Armed with knowledge, skills, and compassion, supported by the generosity of our sponsors, our students become catalysts for positive change in their communities. They uplift, inspire, and transform lives, embodying the true meaning of giving back.”

While Algoma U awards many scholarships and bursaries to its students on an annual basis, including millions funded by the university and millions more by donors, it said the following gifts are some of the most notable:
