Algoma University will officially launch a new publication today aimed at giving a platform to its students as well as local writers.

The Algomian, Algoma's online creative writing journal, will feature creative writing in various genres, including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction and one-act plays.

The publication will also encourage submissions from both experienced and emerging writers.

“Algoma University has many talented creative writers. If we give promising writers a place to publish their work, it not only encourages them to make it as good as it can be, it encourages other ambitious creative writers to follow suit," said Dr. Tony Robinson-Smith, editor of The Algomain and creative writing instructor at Algoma University. “Our student contributors — many of whom have taken Algoma University’s creative writing courses to hone their writing skills — have produced works that are dynamic, lively and well-crafted. They tell stories of northern Ontario and those from further afield that are poignant, gritty and honest. We’re excited to be able to feature them in our new publication.”

The Algomian launches today at The Speakeasy on Algoma University’s campus from 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and the event will give local writers an opportunity to meet one another while listening to contributing authors read their work in the first issue of the publication.

Submissions can be made on The Algomian website.
