UPDATE #1:

PUC Services Inc. is reporting that the power has been restored.

ORIGINAL STORY:

The Sault Ste. Marie PUC was reporting power outages in the north end of the city tonight, affecting from 1,300 to 1,400 customers.

In separate outage alerts posted shortly after 9 p.m., the utility said the cause of the outages was unknown.

The outage map highlighted overlapping areas and suggested power is out from parts of the P Patch northward, also affecting the Fort Creek and East Korah areas.

There was no word on when power would be restored.

PUC reminded customers:

  • Downed wires should always be considered energized or "live", and extremely dangerous
  • Do not approach or drive over a downed power line and do not touch anything the power line may be in contact with
  • Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about powerline safety and the dangers that can be associated with power lines
  • Take all the necessary safety precautions during a power outage

If you have any information about the cause of an outage, you can call the PUC emergency number at 759-6555.
