Central Algoma Secondary School is getting ready to kick off the first part of its 50th reunion spectacular this Family Day weekend with an alumni hockey tournament, a curling bonspiel, and a dance in Thessalon.

Five open division teams and three rec division teams will compete inside the Thessalon Memorial Arena on Saturday and Sunday for the hockey tournament, while curlers will hit the sheet at the Thessalon Curling Club on Saturday only.

Organizers are still looking for one more curling team.

The Alumni Dance, featuring live music from Wyld Stallyns, will be held at the Curling Club this Saturday at 8 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online for $15 or at the door for $20, and it’s open to all alumni and spouses.

In an email to SooToday, reunion organizer and CASS alumnus Nigel Good says he can feel the anticipation building heading into this weekend.

“CASS has a strong history of special and unique events over the years,” he says. “I have a strong sense of community and pride in our history and traditions and felt this was a great opportunity to help celebrate our past and get the community involved in such a special milestone.”

Also the athletic coordinator for extracurricular sports at CASS, Good explains the reunion is an incredibly momentous occasion for the school and all of its alumni.

“CASS has always had a strong sense of community and family and having events like these help bring graduates back together to reflect and celebrate the past,” he says. “CASS alumni have always felt a commitment to supporting each other in times of need and celebration.”

“Having these events help foster those relationships and continue that feeling of community and pride for each other.”

The reunion’s main festivities, many of which will celebrate the talents of past graduates, will be held during the Canada Day weekend.

Taking place from June 30 to July 2, the activities will include an alumni intramural co-ed night, an artisan market featuring CASS alumni artisans, live music from former CASS students, an alumni golf tournament, and a staff meet and greet during an open house at the school where former students will be able to tour the school and see the changes that have been made over the years.
