A Community Improvement Plan (CIP) is being developed by the City for housing development and public input is being sought.
The plan is looking to address housing need through various financial incentives and the City of Sault Ste. Marie is holding an open house later this month to gather ideas from residents.
The open house is scheduled for July 22 in the Russ Ramsay Room on the third floor of the Civic Centre. It will be a come-and-go format between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The CIP introduces three main financial incentive programs that include a Per-Door Grant, a Tax Increment Equivalent Grant, and a Feasibility Study Grant. Properties that are eligible first neighbourhoods and downtown areas, other strategic development areas, and the remainder of the other urban settlement area.
The City estimates needing approximately 3,115 new housing units by 2036 to meet projected demand and the Province has set a target for the City to build 1,500 new units by 2031. The City is committed to meeting or exceeding the target by 2031 and fulfilling the housing demand by 2036.
The CIP draft is available for review on the City’s Public Input website and comments can also be submitted through the site.
