The City of Sault Ste. Marie has received $350,687 from the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Commission as a third-quarter payment for hosting the Gateway Casinos site.

So far, during OLG’s fiscal year (April 1, 2023 to March 31, 2024), Sault Ste. Marie has received $1,048,984. Since the site opened in May 1999, the city has received $34,924,519, according to a news release.

“OLG continues to provide Municipality Contribution Agreement payments for vital programs and services that benefit Saultites,” said MPP Ross Romano.  “Gateway Casinos Sault Ste Marie offers good, local jobs and plays an important role in supporting our strong, vibrant community for families to live, work and play.”

The money is spent on such priorities as new infrastructure and parks and recreation.

The payments to host communities are based on a formula applied across all gaming sites in Ontario using a graduated scale of revenue.

OLG shares proceeds of casino gaming with local communities. Payments are part of OLG’s mandate to reinvest its profits in the province. Since 1994, host communities have received more than $2 billion in non-tax gaming revenue.
