Camp McDougall has cancelled its summer programming this year due to staff shortages.

A special fundraiser dedicated to supporting the reopening of Camp McDougall for the 2025 summer season is taking place next month and the community is invited to join in the festivities.

The Sweet Autumn Shindig will take place Saturday, Sept. 28 at Rankin Arena, bringing together families and friends for an evening of fun, food, and entertainment, all for a great cause, organizers say.

"The Sweet Autumn Shindig promises to be a memorable occasion with a variety of activities for all ages, a delicious autumn-themed roast beef dinner, games, and silent auction," the camp said in a news release.

"This family-friendly event is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the festive fall atmosphere while contributing to the reopening of Camp McDougall."

All proceeds will go directly toward ensuring that Camp McDougall can reopen and provide a "safe, enriching, and unforgettable camp experience for children in the region", the camp said.

"The camp has faced significant challenges in recent years, but with the community’s support, we are determined to welcome campers back in 2025 to help celebrate the 65th anniversary!"

The camp closed suddenly in July 2023 saying a lack of key staffers including a cook and certified lifeguards made it impossible to stay open.

Camp McDougall is a co-ed Christian summer camp for ages 6 to 17, located just west of Thessalon on the shores of Lake Huron.

Established in 1960 and an Incorporated Ministry of the United Church of Canada, the camp offers age-specific summer sessions with activities including canoeing, swimming, arts and crafts, games, out-trips, theme days, and "the BOG".

"Our mission is to enrich the lives of campers by providing quality outdoor recreational programming that promotes positive self-esteem, acceptance, and friendship in a safe and inclusive Christian community," the camp said.

In addition to attending the event, sponsorship opportunities and donations are also welcome. For more information on how to support the event, contact campmcdougall@gmail.com
