Five wildfires burning in northeast district, ministry says

The Cochrane district appears to be the current hot spot for wildfires in northeastern Ontario, according to the latest report from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry.

There was one new wildland fire confirmed by early evening on Tuesday, Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services for the MNRF said.

That makes five active wildland fires currently in the northeast fire region, according to the AFFES.

• Cochrane 10 (COC010) is a 0.2 hectare fire located roughly 40 km west of Attawapiskat. It is not under control.
• Cochrane 9 (COC009) is a 1,500-hectare fire that is not yet under control. It's about 3 km east of Parson Lake and 8 km west of the Quebec border. Five crews are committed to the fire.
• Cochrane 8 (COC008) is a 35-hectare fire that is being observed. This fire is about 57.5 km northwest of Moosonee.
• Cochrane 6 (COC006) was remapped and is 13 hectares and is under control. This fire is 20 km northwest of Fort Severn off the coast of Hudson Bay. One Ontario FireRanger crew and a Coastal Ranger are assigned to the fire.
• North Bay 5 (NOR005) remains under control. This 106-hectare wildland fire is about 3 km southeast of Cobalt.

The fire hazard varied from moderate to high across the region, except for Espanola which currently has a low fire hazard, according to the ministry.
