A gas leak has closed off the area

1:15 p.m. update

Platoon Chief Jeff Lajoie told SooToday the gas leak is now under now under control. However, Union Gas and Public Works remain on the scene and the alleyway is not yet open to the public.

Original 9:45 a.m. information

Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services blocked the alleyway between Abbott Street and Tancred Street, just north of Wellington East.

Platoon Chief Jeff Lajoie said a construction vehicle with Public Works struck a gas line.

Around 9:30 a.m. the smell and hissing sound of leaking gas filled the area of the alleyway.

The gas leak occurred on an empty lot that was being mowed said Lajoie. 

At 9:37 a.m. Union Gas were on scene.
