The City of Sault Ste. Marie says it is beginning work this week on reconfiguration of Goulais Avenue in what it says is an effort to improve traffic safety.

The project, spanning from Second Line to Chippewa Street will transform the current four-lane roadway into a three-lane configuration, the city says.

"This new layout will include two-through lanes for vehicles, painted bike lanes, and a centre two-way left turn lane," the city said in a release.

"This redesign aims to enhance traffic safety, reduce vehicle speeds, and promote cycling and pedestrian activity."

Work installing traffic signage and pre-marking in preparation for line painting is set to start this week, the city says.

The project is expected to be completed "by June", weather permitting, according to the city.

Residents and motorists were being advised to be aware of the ongoing activities and be cautious when travelling through the area.

"The city appreciates the public's patience and cooperation as it works to create a more accessible environment for all road users," the city said.
