Helping Hands celebrates 9 years of community service (5 photos)

“One big heart can reach the world of hearts.”

One of its latest efforts truly has a global reach.

Helping Hands is assisting a family transition from Ukraine to begin a new life in the Sault. With the help from their online community, many of the items requested by the family were offered up quickly.  

That’s in line with the message Helping Hands founder Wendy Gutcher has been spreading throughout the region for the last nine years.

Originally starting out of her home in 2013, Gutcher built this service from the ground up into what is now their Gore Street location. 

Her not-for-profit collects, organizes, and provides those in need with free items such as clothes, household items, and other essentials. 

Helping Hands has over a dozen hardworking volunteers who help Gutcher make this endeavour possible. 

“It has been nine wonderful years of serving the needs of our community,” she says. “We have a wonderful group of staff and board volunteers. Without these loving and giving people none of this would be possible.”

The road hasn’t been an easy one for Gutcher and her team, especially in recent years as they’ve faced one unpredictable challenge after another. 

“It’s been a long journey,” she says. “We’ve had COVID issues, floods, people smashing our windows. We don’t have any money and we’re a free service, so it’s been hard.” 

While times have been tougher as of late, their impact on the community is undeniable. 

The Helping Hands Facebook page has over 14 thousand members and has played a vital role in supporting underprivileged and homeless locals. Members can post requests for items they’re in need of or things they’re willing to donate – all at no cost. 

“The support is overwhelming,” Gutcher says. “Everyone believes in Helping Hands. I’ve always said it just takes one big heart to make a difference.”

The organization has also introduced a brand-new line of coffee featuring two flavours: Café Carmello and Café Viva. The bags can be purchased for $15.97 with proceeds going towards serving the needy, as well as their efforts to find a new space to better serve the community.
