Provincial charges against Steve Powley for harvesting a moose without a licence outside of Sault Ste. Marie in 1993 was used as a test case by the Métis Nation of Ontario, resulting in a 10-year legal battle that led to the eventual affirmation of Métis rights by the Supreme Court of Canada.

The Historic Sault Ste. Marie Métis Council will be launching a digital archive.

“This accessible digital portal houses hundreds of documents, photos, and ancestral objects that tell the story of the Sault Ste. Marie Métis Community and the Métis Nation of Ontario,” a news release said.

A launch event will be held Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Delta Hotel.
